A complete internal transformation and two storey extension create a unique modern family home, orientated to make the most of the stunning South Croydon views.
The proposal seeks to better connect the house and garden, by demolishing the 90’s rear extension and garage and replacing them with a larger open-plan kitchen and dining space. By lowering the rear extension by half a metre, access to the garden is greatly improved, with a level transition from inside to outside.
A new off-centred hallway forms an artery from front-to back of the house, segregating the private back-of-house spaces to one side and the public reception spaces to the other.
Designed around the specific needs of the family, the first-floor rear extension adds an additional bedroom and bathroom upstairs and simplifies the chaotic existing first floor arrangement. Large windows offer the two rear bedrooms picturesque views towards the garden and to South Croydon beyond.
The materiality for the proposed design aims to improve the house’s connection with the surrounding houses – with improved fenestration to the front and a mixture of rendered and brick finishes to the external walls. The roof to the new single storey front extension mirrors the style of the roof to the main house and offers an improved sense of balance to the front elevation.
